Australian farmers are doing it tough this year, whether it is floods, droughts or the cost of living. Farmers are finding it hard to continue to have the overhead of full time workers, or are struggling to find good workers. The work still needs to be done and it needs to be done well. That is why I created Cedar Ridge Livestock.

Cedar Ridge Livestock (CRL) is a livestock contracting company, made to perform the work you need without the overheads of full time workers. Whether the work  includes horses, cattle, sheep or tractor work I can help you out. CRL works under the mindset of “You will never know everything”, and invites employers to teach me new skills and new methods of completing tasks.

No rooms for egos in this business.

My name is Sam, I’m a 22 year old “hobby” farmer - as of the time this is being written. I have huge goals for myself and where I want to be in this industry in ten years, and this is my starting point.

I have a certificate II in Equine Science from TAFE and a Diploma of Equine Business Management from Marcus Oldham, which amounts to three years of equine study and I am coming up on 8 years in the Equine business. I have retrained my own horses and have helped others train theirs, I have taught people how to ride and have taken them on tours through national parks as a trail ride leader.

I have worked at a feedlot for a year and a half, loading and unloading trucks, treating cattle, inducting cattle, moving cattle around paddocks and pens and driving machinery. I have worked on a mixed stock farm for a few months and I have had a few cattle of my own. Alongside that, I have driven a few different tractors and operated a hay cart to feed out hay to sheep and cattle. I am also a holder of a ChemCert and a Telehandler & Front end Loader licence.

I am going to complete a Bachelor of Business (Agriculture) at Marcus Oldham across the next three years and I am building a client base for when I finish my degree.

The whole reason I started CRL is to fill a niche as mentioned above but also to provide some insight into what it’s like starting in agriculture as the first generation. So many young people are now doing contracting work as it allows more freedom and experience.

I love to travel to different areas of Australia and that is eventually my ultimate goal, to create a business where I can go where I want, do what I want and help farmers whether it be contracting livestock or creating nutrition programs for both horses and cattle.

I have many skills and much knowledge and genuinely can’t wait to get started.
